The office of Continuous Education and Outreach (OCEO) established
during the mid 1990s has been successful in the establishment
of RutgersOnline and engaging faculty
to develop a significant portfolio of for-credit Online course
offerings. In addition, OCPE recently launched Rutgers food.net
which provides a portfolio of non-credit courses for a number
of non-profit and for-profit companies and organizations. OCEO
invests in development of Online courses using the e-companion
approach.
Several
academic units are now offering Internet courses through
RutgersOnline, the new virtual campus at Rutgers University.
RutgersOnline will extend the services and reach of the
University providing students with the opportunity to telecommute
to campus from virtually anywhere. RutgersOnline students
will benefit from some of Rutgers most distinguished faculty
members through online courses that are equivalent to traditional
courses offered on campus. Currently the course listing
is somewhat limited; please consult the link to catalog
of online courses for a complete listing of what is being
offered each semester. Also provided is contact information
for the specific courses.
RutgersOnline courses are designed as asynchronous learning experiences,
which means you can work on these classes at the times that are convenient
to you. The classes are highly interactive and there is a significant
discussion component to them, which is why class size is limited.
All courses listed are equivalent to regular in-class graduate and
undergraduate level courses, except that students won't have to spend
time commuting to class!
Online Course Development
eCompanion is a state of the art, robust, Internet-based
tool to enhance classroom instruction. It provides Rutgers
educators with "power tools" in support of classroom
teaching. It enables you to easily supplement traditional
classes with online communication tools and academically
sound content. You can make important student information
accessible "anytime, anywhere," and significantly increase
interaction and access to course materials.
eCompanion works through the creation
of an online course "shell". This shell is set up to accompany your
face to face course. The instructor populates the shell with information
and links. Highly flexible and intuitively easy to use, it requires
no knowledge of html, can be modified in moments, and offers a wide
array of tools such as announcements, group-mailing, chat rooms,
automated test building, gradebook, supplementary course material
uploading, document sharing, student homework drop boxes, threaded
discussions, and Webliography®.
